‘place of bad smells’ is now behind E2E5 walkers
Posted: Robert Alcock @ Mon Jul 19, 10 5:57pm
End to End 5
Sunday 18 July walk from Tapanappa to Balquhidder, complete with ‘that hill’, was attended by approx. 45 walkers. After an early morning light drizzle, the weather was fine until a shower fell mid afternoon as we approached the protection of waiting cars. The rain served only to reduce the numbers taking advantage of the after-walk celebrations and to remind a few walkers that rain coats are actually a good idea.
Lunch in the sun about half way along Tunkalilla Beach was a joy and provided fortification for climbing ‘that hill’ which, if it has no name, ought to be called ‘The Pinchgut’. Despite the required physical effort, not a single whinge was heard from the group. Well done everyone!
Did you know that Tunkalilla Creek apparently got its name from offal from the whaling station at Encounter Bay finding its way into the creek. Tunkalilla is a corruption of an Aboriginal word meaning ‘place of bad smells’.
See all E2E5's at next month’s walk. ............... Russell O'Brien

E2E3 - Mt Remarkable celebrations
Posted: Robert Alcock @ Fri Jul 9, 10 10:31am

On Sat 2rd July the E2E3’s walked 23k over Mt Remarkable to Alligator Gorge Road, noted as the 2nd most difficult day walk on the Trail. Over 70 celebrated arriving safely after 8hrs of ups and downs. A chilly 7am Melrose start gave us the sun’s warm glow and first rays as we trekked up My Remarkable. A lovely sunny day provided wonderful views of this Remarkable country, so green, with the cool air making walking enjoyable. Sunday John Potter completed his 1,200km trek with the Murray Town to Melrose 16k leg. All joined in with John to celebrate. John walked with E2E3, E2E2 and E2E4 weekend walks to complete the trail in 3 years. Congratulations John.

NEWS FLASH Changes to Bus Payment NEWS FLASH
Posted: Julian @ Mon Jun 21, 10 8:28pm
As of Monday 21st June 2010, any walks involving buses must be paid for at the time of registration.
There will be no Cash on the Day.
You can pay on line either using
PayPal account-very easy to set up and very secure
PayPal using a credit card-must be done for each booking, however still secure
    Through the office
Phone booking using your Credit Card - fiddly, however it's secure
In person at the office -either cash or credit card-like any purchase.
      Too easy!!
NOTE The Friends pay for the buses regardless of how many walkers turn up. Often it is the Cash on the Day walkers who fail to show up. This then leaves the Friends to cover the cost and often denies another walker a seat, particularly if it's a limited numbers walk.

E2E3 June Long weekend
Posted: Robert Alcock @ Tue Jun 15, 10 11:10pm
Wow – stunning views over the plains, Pt Pirie and gulf. The lower Flinders ridge has a lot of ups and downs creating serious walking along the Heysen Trail, to The Bluff and beyond. The low scrub with small soft looking yaccas indicate a lower rainfall, tho we walked on wet or soggy ground for 3 days, with lots of sun and no rain. Morning frost covering everything and we scraped ice off the windscreens for our early starts. It’s good to see the country greening up, and the farmers were busy out on the tractors as we reached farmland on Monday. Our nos were down due to travelling leaders, a few illnesses and bad backs. The Queens Birthday command performances on Sat night showed what talent is in the group (and lack of it in some members). Royalty attend and mixed with serfs, and all loudly applauded the entertainment (the good and the bad). On Monday a couple ladies tried to take us along the Mawson Trail– but we didn’t have bikes! Mt Remarkable kept getting bigger, with the thought that we will be on top on our next trip north. 2 of us were able to enjoy a Stone Hut quandong pie, with cream (of course) for morning tea on the trail. Yet we missed out on their vanilla slices, just, after 15 mins queuing on Monday. Thanks must go to long time supporters of our Trailwalker mag, Talyala Hills/Smith Farmstay and Taralee Orchard who accommodated the leaders over the past 2 trips. Both great places to stay.

End to End walks have commenced
Posted: Robert Alcock @ Mon May 3, 10 11:43pm

On Sunday 2 May saw the first of our 2010 End 2 End (E2E) Walks – the E2E4 group walked from Myponga to Mt Compass. Wonderful fine day, and with a coolish breeze we kept our cool. The 3 groups wound their way up and down. And up and down couple more times thru Yulte Park scrub, then traversed open hills and ridges, before caressing Mt Cone on the long and winding road home. The 22km sorted out those who forgot their walking over summer (stiffening legs on the ride home, hey). Thanks to our lovely support ladies, again there with the Haighs Frog treat to assist us on the final leg to the cars.

The E2E3 are up north next weekend, then the new E2E5 commences. (fully booked I believe). With the other Sunday walks, our busy walk season is well under way.

Grampians 2010
Posted: Julian @ Mon Apr 26, 10 7:33pm

Anzac Weekend saw the Friends at the Grampians once again. Lead by Simon and Arrienne two full walking days and three boisterous nights were "suffered" in the Baptist Camp at Halls Gap. Simon lead one walk for the hardy, summitting Boronia Peak on Saturday, with Arrienne leading the not so hardy on an epic walk around the Wonderland. Why the Wonderland, well it's a wonder we let Alice loose with a map.

Sunday saw the even hardier tackle a through walk across the Mitchell Plateau, from Mt William to Jimmy Creek. A cold start lead to a wonderful sunny day, albeit cold winds, with great views from the plateau.
Arrienne and Peter lead the left-overs with some doing a shorter walk leading to Greek cooking lessons back at camp, with Arrienne. The others undertaking a seven hour "stroll" with Peter.

Typical of Simon the nights entertainment were Zorba the Greek dancing leasons and suitably, on Anzac Day, how to rip off your friends with a game of two-up (Simon's Rules)
Monday departure lead to Arapiles for a short walk to the top, then home.
Well done the organisers.

End 2 End 3 – A double celebration weekend
Posted: Robert Alcock @ Tue Jun 16, 09 12:10am
On Sun 14 June Michelle completed the Heysen Trail – for the second time! (is this the first for a lady?) and husband Jerry completed his first End 2 End (the first of many?). The celebration (accompanied with the bagpipe) was at the end of 2 days of walking – Web Gap Road to Burra Gorge. Congratulations and well done Michelle and Jerry (well known for their leadership with the End 2 End 2 walkers). Despite predictions, the walks were free from rain – tho’ we needed protection from the very strong, cold head-wind on Sat. One group pushed onto Huppatz Hut for a late lunch, and welcome shelter! Some road walking was enhanced with the wonderful vistas from the top of the ranges, and with stretches of mallee scrub. Some precision walking was required as the crops in some paddocks gave very little room along the fence line. And watch out for the fallen fence posts! Bunny ears, butterflies, a bowling outfit, and beanies to bowler hats fitted the B for Burra theme, and Bogart and Bacall joined in with the noisy crowd which filled the Golf Clubrooms Sat. night (as well as that well-known Blond Bimbo Ben!). Another good weekend on the trail.

End to End 4 – second day – A big challenge for many!!
Posted: Robert Alcock @ Mon May 25, 09 3:07pm
It was a full day for some walkers, and the organisers. The fast group walked through in good time and missed the steady rain, which caught the second group before they finished. The other two groups would have found the narrow, rocky track, and also the steep sections, extremely slippery in the persistent rain. We congratulate all for getting through safely as it must have been a very challenging day for many walkers. Unfortunately one group went on a steep detour and lost an hour, meaning they spent much longer with the rain, with the tail-enders, slowed by the slippery conditions, arriving back rather late in the day. While the focus had to be on the feet, I hope most were able to appreciate the good views across the deep gullies of Deep Creek, with the ocean stretching beyond. Deep Creek waterfall was flowing well and the creek crossing, with its wet slippery rocks slowed all down. The final climb, with its recently graded track looping uphill, was a great improvement on the previous 3 steep rocky climbs. Many thanks to all the leaders, organisers and esp. Bev and Ralene who again gave up their day to do the admin, early exit support, and handed out a welcoming Haigh’s chocolate as the walkers arrived “home”. That section had the most challenging walking we will encounter until we get way up north. Even in wet conditions the next few walks will be so much easier and enjoyable.

A successful start to the End to End Four walks. 145 walkers safely hiked the 15km wet and slippery trail, and finished to a Haigh’s chocolate frog treat - from our lovely lady assistants. The day was blowy, sunny with just a few isolated rain squalls to keep us cool. With dolphins, rainbows, a spaceship, wonderful cloud formations, plus a rugged coast, rolling hills, kangaroos aplenty and coastal scrub – such a variety of experiences we were treated to. Many thanks to all the volunteers for all the organising, and to the walkers who came to enjoy.

A drizzly morning evolved into a lovely sunny day. Our display was popular for new enquiries and a stopping spot for our members to have a chat.

We can now get on with a new season of walking. Happy Walking!!

Plan to realign the Heysen Trail through the Flinders Ranges
Posted: jez @ Mon Jan 5, 09 3:24pm
The Department for Environment and Heritage is seeking input on a Draft Trail Master Plan for the Flinders Ranges National Park. Included in this draft master plan is the realignment of much of the Heysen Trail that passes throught the park to separate it from the Mawson Trail, avoid maintenance roads, pass through key features of the park and create new dedicated hike-in campsites.

The proposed trail network consists of 165 kms of trails across the park. This is based on closure or downgrading of 40.6 kms of the existing trail network (predominantly walking trails) and the development of 72kms of new trail.

The draft master plan can be viewed in the Latest News section of the DEH website.

Honorary Member Doug Leane crosses his last stile
Posted: Julian @ Wed Dec 17, 08 10:30am
Long-standing Friends Honorary Member, Doug Leane, died this week, aged 82
He had been in poor health for the last few months, and died in hospital, following a turn at home.
He will be remembered by the Friends and walkers for his dedication and enthusiasm for maintenance of the section around the Warren/Hale Conservation Park, Mount Crawford and Freeman's Hut.
He was also a very keen walker (until relatively recently).
For many years he took his team out every Thursday for maintenance and was often involved in helping other section leaders.
There are few huts along the Trail that do not have something of Doug's handiwork in their maintenance or in their furnishings.
The Friends extend sincere sympathy to his family.

Tassie Members Complete Mini Heysen Trek
Posted: Julian @ Sun Oct 5, 08 4:11pm
Jenny Benn and David Sands, two of our Tasmanian members, have completed almost a month on the Trail.

They walked from Kapunda to Cape Jervis, using a variety of B and B's, camping out and some luxury hotel accommodation (if you could call the Victor Harbor Hotel luxury). The walk took them from 3rd September to 1st October and from the various SMS messages and phone conversations they had a great time, albeit wet on occasions.

Loved the Trail, the variety, struggled up the hills, were almost blown away at Mount Cone.

Overall they thought the Trail in great shape.

Yesterday afternoon the End-to-End 2 group reached the end of the Heysen Trail at Parachilna Gorge. For 9 of the 50 hikers it was the culmination of many years of hard work as they completed the entire trail.

The group had hiked from Red Range, just south of Wilpena Pound, to the end of the trail over the past 7 days.

Last night they had a celebratory dinner at The Woolshed restaurant at Rawnsley Park, paying tribute to those that completed the trail and those that helped them along the way.

VISITORS to Adelaide this approaching spring have a unique treat in store: the Art Gallery of South Australia is mounting an exhibition of the work of a favourite son, Wilhelm Ernst Hans Franz Heysen.

Quote:
HONOURING the contribution to the way Hans Heysen opened our eyes and hearts to the Australian landscape is the Heysen Trail, one of the world's great walking experiences. Not that Heysen actually walked it as the trail didn't exist as an entity in his time. From its starting point 100km south of Adelaide at Cape Jervis, it passes through Heysen's favourite, and most often painted, regions in the Adelaide Hills and up to his beloved Flinders Ranges.

The group of around 40 will include a dozen members who will complete their trek on Saturday 16th August. The Celebratory Dinner that night at Rawnsley Park will be a happy one for the new End to Enders, after many years of walking and training – until it became an obsession to complete the Heysen Trail. We wish them safe walking, until they’re over that final stile.

I had a call from John Potter this afternoon. The group are all safe and well in Port Moresby. Arrived this afternoon as scheduled - after a 4.30am rise this morning.

His comments -
• A much drier track than for the previous group.
• Found it tough yet a great experience. Enjoyed it greatly.
• Kevin Liddiard said it was toughest thing he's ever done.
• Were 6 "girls" and 8 "boys" in the group.
• Leader was a younger lady whom John took a shine too. (at least it sounded that way)
• Good socialising with card playing at night.
• Had v little rain - no coats needed while walking.
• John took 300 photos.

And of course - Simon played bagpipes on a number of occasions.

Kokoda Trek - Friends #1
Posted: Julian @ Sat May 24, 08 10:00am
The first group of the Friends have now completed the Kokoda Track though not without some casualties.

Fourteen started, however only twelve completed the track, two being lost to broken ankles.

The Track is NOT for the faint-hearted or unfit-it's hard work-yet the rewards are enormous.

The scenery is fabulous, the people along the track warm, friendly and welcoming, the history tear rending and the MUD sticky and slippery-as the two casualties will testify.
