I will start my thruhike in about 3 weeks and have begun the detailed planning. There is just one question I could not resolve with the help of the guide book yet.
Where can I buy gas cannisters on the way? There has been an older post about that topic but there were no good answers there.
I will pass through the following towns to resupply. Which of those have some sort of an outdoor store or would sell gas cannisters?
Victor Harbour
Aldgate/Bridgewater
Tanunda
Kapunda
Burra
Spalding
Crystal Brook
Melrose
Quorn
Hawker
Wilpena Pond
Thanks for any input on that question,
Christine |

Christine,
Gas cannisters may not be available any many of the towns you pass through, unless they are a very common variety.
Victor Harbour Probably
Aldgate/Bridgewater Probably
Tanunda Probably
Kapunda Probably
Burra Probably
Spalding Unlikley
Crystal Brook Possibly
Melrose Unlikley
Quorn Possibly
Hawker Possibly
Wilpena Pond Unlikley
They would be in our hardware stores.
What type are you using? _________________ Julian Monfries

Hi Christine,
Gas canisters are sometimes stocked by hardware stores, supermarkets and service stations. It might be easiest to contact such stores to see what they stock. You can find these using "yellow pages online" or by googling the combination of store type with town name. Good luck.
I know that there is a hardware store in the Victor Harbor mall, which seems to stock everything. There is also a general store in Melrose, which has a reasonable stock of camping gear. There are also hardware chains, such as "Mitre 10", in some country towns.
Perhaps the friends could consider a directory of such stores on their web-pages?
Regards, Paul. |

Thanks for your answers.
I am using common screw-top gas cannisters made by MSR, Snowpeak and the like. I will do some more internet research on the hardware stores when I have better internet access.
Thanks so much,

Christine
If it's pretty common variety it should be easy to source, however there may be few towns with shops having any cannisters of any sort for sale.
If we can help let us know _________________ Julian Monfries
