Gas Canisters
Screw-on gas canisters (iso-butane and propane, 100g or 230g net), such as those made by Kovea, Primus, Jetboil, Optimus, Elemental and MSR, are vital to many through hikers. They are often sold in camping stores, sometimes in hardware stores, and in areas visited by backpackers and campers they can sometimes be found in supermarkets, general stores or petrol stations. Stockists are listed below, noted as either ample or limited supply. Towns on the Heysen Trail north of Kapunda are small and sometimes remote so shops usually maintain low stock levels of speciality items such as gas canisters, you should phone ahead to check supply. As you head north of Adelaide into more remote areas, expect to pay higher prices.

Be aware that there are other similar-looking canisters such as the clip-on canisters (not compatible with most stoves designed for screw-on canisters) and older style canisters that require piercing can also be found at some of these locations. The clip-on canisters usually have a plastic cap that cannot be removed without breaking the plastic seal (similar to screw-caps on consumable drinking bottles) - screw-on canister caps can be removed without breaking the seal. Butane canisters that resemble aerosol cans are common as many vehicle-based backpackers use them; the stoves are too large for hikers.

Internet Access
Some towns have internet cafes. Internet access is sometimes available in Visitor Centres. It is often available in public libraries, this is free but most libraries request you to book a time. Some accommodation providers provide WIFI access.
Payphones

ppol/welcome.do). Public phones are installed on street footpaths by Telstra. Payphones may also be available in hospitals, petrol stations, pubs and shopping centres. Telstra’s payphones accept $2, $1, 50 cent, 10 cent and 5 cent coins, as well as Telstra Phonecards with values of $5, $10 and $20. Telstra Phonecards are sold nationally at retail outlets such as newsagents, convenience stores and pharmacies where the "Telstra Phonecard Sold Here" sign is displayed. Some remote payphones do not accept coins.
Laundromats
Coin operated washing machines and dryers can be commonly found in caravan parks, backpackers accommodation and some motels. Laundromat premises can be found in larger towns such as Victor Harbor, Bridgewater, Mt Barker, Tanunda and Quorn.

Pharmarcies in small towns may not be able to dispense prescriptions until the following day. A pharamacist might not be attendance, or might only be attendance during certain hours on certain days.

PLB/EPIRB Hire
PLB (Personal Locator Beacon) or EPIRBs (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons) can be used by bushwalkers to raise the alarm in an emergency. The devices use satellites to relay a distress signal to emergency services, thereby being useful across the whole Heysen Trail (mobile phone reception is limited over much of the trail.)
The following providers are known to hire out PLBs:
Population Figures
Population figures come from the 2006 national census. The figures can be useful in determining the level of services to expect in a town. When the figure says "less than" the town is so small figures are only available for the broader area.
